I began my career in the fledgling mobile telecoms industry in ’97. I’ve worked for several mobile operators, a leading equipment vendor, and an approved service provider. Towards the end of the 2010s, I worked for an ICT company and, as project manager, rebuilt the core network of one of Ireland’s mobile operators. I’m working with one of the ‘Big Four’ now across a variety of private and public sectors

In my years of leading complex projects, I’ve used everything from Gantt charts to earned value tools but when things got tough, it was always soft skills that made the real difference.

    Here’s what I’ve learned:

    🧠 Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
The ability to read the room, manage your emotions, and influence others calmly is what keeps teams together during chaos.

    🗣 Effective Communication
It’s not just what you say — it’s how and when you say it. Misaligned messages cost more than delayed schedules.

    🤝 Stakeholder Management
You can’t “manage” stakeholders without empathy and trust-building. It’s more about connection than control.

    💡 Decision-Making Under Pressure
Logic is key, but confidence, calmness, and clarity under pressure come from self-awareness and experience — not software.

    🧭 Leadership, Not Just Management
Project Managers are change leaders. Leading with empathy and vision is what drives…

Absolutely agree. EQ makes all the difference when things get tough. On one of my recent projects, tensions were high after unexpected changes, and what helped most was simply staying calm and listening properly.

Soft skills like steady communication and empathy have often done more to keep projects on track than any tool. It’s what keeps teams aligned when the pressure’s on.

Thank you Arsalan for sharing this post. This is such a valuable reminder. It’s easy to focus on deliverables and tools, but as you’ve outlined so well, emotional intelligence, trust, and clarity are often what determine whether a project thrives under pressure.

For me, adaptability has been key – staying grounded when things shift unexpectedly, and being open to adjusting how I lead depending on the team and context.

I’d love to hear how you approach developing soft skills across your team – are there practices you’ve found effective in embedding EQ into your project culture?
