When is Situational Leadership Theory used in psychology?

Situational Leadership Theory is applied in psychology and administrative leadership when there is diversity in employee levels (beginner, intermediate and expert), or when an organization needs to achieve a balance between control and flexibility to face new projects, in addition to adapting teams to different stages of growth and development.

Applying this theory leads to tangible positive outcomes through the leader’s flexibility in:

    – Developing employees through methods of participation, negotiation, and persuasion.

    – Raising productivity levels and improving overall performance.

    – Enhancing motivation and job satisfaction among individuals.

    – Clarifying authorities and decision-making boundaries for each employee, while referring strategic or complex decisions to the appropriate decision-makers.

Great explanation, Mohammed. I like how you highlighted the balance between control and flexibility. Situational Leadership really stands out because it adapts to people’s competence and confidence levels, which makes it so relevant both in psychology and organisational settings.

Hello, I’m Kartik Sharma, a Senior Implementation Manager based in London. I’ve spent the last 16 years helping organizations deliver complex software programs, mainly in financial services – think banking platforms, mortgage systems, and compliance technology.

What I love most about this work is the people side of it – aligning teams, removing blockers, and helping stakeholders feel confident about what’s happening. I’ve had the chance to work across different countries and cultures, which has taught me that good project management is as much about listening and adapting as it is about planning.

I’m particularly interested in how we balance Agile practices with the realities of regulated industries, and how we build delivery processes that actually stick rather than just existing on paper. Recently finished my MBA at Lancaster, which gave me some fresh perspectives on how project delivery connects to broader business strategy.

I’m here to learn from others’ experiences…
