Hi everyone,

I’m Luke Pivac, a Delivery Lead based in Auckland, New Zealand. I’ve spent much of my career working across banking, technology, data, and business transformation initiatives, with experience in project delivery, agile ways of working, and leading multidisciplinary teams through change.

The projects I support typically involve digital transformation, data platforms, customer experience improvements, and technology-enabled business change, often in complex enterprise environments.

At the moment, I’m particularly curious about how AI can enhance project delivery and leadership. I’m exploring how project professionals can use AI to improve planning, decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and delivery outcomes while maintaining a focus on agility, servant leadership, and human-centred practices.

Looking forward to learning from the community, sharing experiences, and connecting with fellow project professionals across the Asia-Pacific region.

Number 5 really appeals to me. There is indeed no one size fits all approach. And customising your approach to different stakeholders is very true. Working with dev teams and now working with C-suite was such a learning curve. But once you get the ‘knack’ you become such a more powerful communicator.

So, getting bite sized chunks of information is great for micro-learning, but to fully master something you need to immerse yourself in it. Kind of what I do with project management. However, if you want to know a lot quickly it is great. And if it is of great interest, I will “immerse” myself in it a little later.

What I learned in that time, is not that you need a technical background, but a technology one. Working alongside these teams and in the trenches goes a long way. Knowing how to use the tools they use, goes a long way and knowing how to communicate and speak their language helps. So, my foot is in both camps. Although you don’t necessarily need a technical background, you need to have experience working with them. I have seen many of my colleagues’ demand things, when they do not appreciate the way, you need to approach it.

The Key to Project Management is Having an Agile Mindset

For me, I can summarise it as follows:

Embracing an Agile Mindset: Staying flexible and open to change helps project managers navigate uncertainty and pressure. For example, run a retrospective or lesson’s learnt event with your team to pick up improvements, what you can do better next time.

Continuous Improvement: Learning from setbacks rather than dwelling on them fosters resilience and growth. Get time to be reflective, and think about how things can be done better next time.

Strong Team Collaboration: Encouraging open communication and mutual support within the team strengthens collective resilience.Think about team norms, and charters.

Mindfulness and Self-Care: Maintaining personal well-being through mindfulness techniques, exercise, and structured downtime prevents burnout.
