Senior Project Manager at Utimaco Information Security GmbH,04 Sep 2025 at 09:49 pmProject, Product, Service, Solution: Do We Really Agree?
I’ve seen projects start with excitement and energy, only to get stuck on something that looked trivial at first: the words.
In every organization, project, product, service, solution sound obvious. But ask four departments to define them and you’ll get four different answers. That’s where cracks appear: reports that don’t align, teams pulling in opposite directions, customers sensing that behind the brand there isn’t one common voice.
It’s not bureaucracy to stop and agree on definitions.
It’s laying the foundations.
Without them, you’re building on sand.
That’s where ISO standards help. They give us neutral ground, a common compass:
– Project (ISO 21500): a unique set of processes, with defined start and finish dates, undertaken to achieve objectives.
– Product (ISO 9000): the result of a process (tangible or intangible) that can be offered to a customer.
– Service (ISO 9000): the outcome of activities at the interface…
4 LikesI completely agree. Alignment on definitions isn’t bureaucracy, it’s clarity. When a team understands exactly what’s meant by project, product, or service, everything from reporting to decision-making becomes smoother. It’s such a simple step but it makes all the difference in practice.
Thank you for sharing this, Luigi.
I’ve often seen how misaligned terminology can derail projects before they even gain momentum. Aligning on common definitions at the outset may feel like a small step, but it’s actually a cornerstone for clarity, risk reduction, and effective collaboration across teams.
I particularly like how you linked this to ISO standards — having that “neutral ground” gives everyone a compass to work from. In my experience, taking time to agree on language early not only avoids confusion later, but also strengthens stakeholder trust and helps ensure the project delivers true value.
