How do we benefit from psychologist Bruce Tuckman’s stages in project execution?

Tuckman’s stages help build a cohesive team and boost productivity, which directly supports achieving objectives and minimizing execution hurdles. The stages are:

    1. Forming:
This stage focuses on assembling the team and letting members get to know one another. Early on, enthusiasm is high but clarity is low. The leader’s role is to clarify objectives, roles, and ground rules so each person starts with a clear understanding.

    2. Storming:
It’s natural for differences or conflicts to arise. Common indicators of this stage include long meetings without decisions, defensive messaging, small cliques, or worrisome silence from some members. The leader should quickly turn disagreements into structured, positive critical thinking, and establish clear mechanisms for decision-making and committing to decisions.

Thank you Mohammed for sharing this, that’s a great breakdown — I’ve always found Tuckman’s model particularly useful for setting expectations with new teams. It helps normalise conflict during the storming phase and reminds everyone that it’s a natural part of building trust, not a sign of dysfunction.

    • Do you recognise the uncommon ways emotional intelligence manifests in leadership? Beyond the usual traits like empathy and self-regulation, emotional intelligence also manifests in subtle habits, such as maintaining optimism in the face of challenges.

As projects grow more complex, emotionally intelligent leaders are better equipped to navigate conflicts, foster trust, and inspire their teams to perform at their best. How many of these rare signs can you spot in yourself?

    • Conflict in the workplace is inevitable—but it doesn’t have to be destructive. Stephen Haunts, in his work for Pluralsight, outlines a clear path from tension to resolution, helping professionals navigate disagreements with structure and empathy.

By understanding the stages to resolution, project leaders can prevent small issues from becoming major roadblocks, strengthen team relationships, and foster a culture of trust. In high-pressure project environments, this skill is not just valuable—it’s essential for sustained success.
